This little boy hasn’t been on the blog (without his brother) in awhile and I wanted to show his sweet almost SIX year old face! Bear’s birthday is two days away, on Sunday, and to say he’s excited would be an understatement. He has been talking it up for weeks, months actually, and is so excited for a fun-filled weekend! We kicked it off by taking him lunch at school this afternoon, which made my mama heart completely melt. He ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug while wearing a giant paper crown his teacher gave him. Pretty sure he’ll be wearing it all day and I can’t stop laughing about it- oh to be six again. Tomorrow is his birthday party at Main Event with friends before we head to visit family and have a “cousin birthday party”. Safe to say Bear is going to have lots of celebration!
I look back on this year and I can’t believe how quickly it’s flown. Boone was born on February 24th and with that brought a lot of changes into Bear’s life. While he was thrilled about getting a baby brother, there were times I could sense him trying to get our attention or acting out a little between the newness of a sibling, moving into a new home, and starting kindergarten. But the past 3 months or so, he has completely adjusted to life as we know it now and I couldn’t be more proud. He’s the best, sweetest big brother and Boone adores him. He’s doing so well in kindergarten, ahead of the curve and right on the brink of reading. He loves playing outside and riding his scooter around the neighborhood with the other kids around us, and is always happiest in a group. He loves when we have company and we call him our “Social Bear”.
I’m well aware of how biased I am as a mother, but I’m also well aware of the fact that it’s my job to be my sons’ #1 supporter. I always want both Bear and Boone to know how loved and special they are. I remind Bear all the time that while I love Boone and him the same, he will always be the one who made me a Mommy. Six years ago, God gave Zach and I the best gift we’ve ever been given.
Happy Birthday to our Bear Clayton!
Title is a little confusing, isn't it? But the truth is, our Bear is such a fish these days and we are loving watching him become more and more comfortable in the water. He is taking lessons at FINS and has excelled so much just this summer- we are amazed with his progress and his sudden love for swimming. Last summer, he wouldn't even put his face in the water. Now he is swimming under the water, going down for dive sticks, jumping off the side of the pool by himself and swimming back to the edge, and so much more. I can't believe how far he's come and am so proud of our little guy!
If you live in Houston and are looking for swimming lessons for your little one, we highly recommend FINS. The lessons are 30 minutes long and you can choose day of the week/time that best fits your schedule; Bear was going on a weekday at 11am but is now going in the evenings to fit our schedule once school starts. He had Coach Cody for the first few weeks until he moved up a level and is loving Coach Christina, as well. FINS is family owned and operated, which we love, and the owners are very involved in the business. I met with one of them not long ago and he stressed to me that even if FINS didn't work out, that he hoped we'd keep doing lessons no matter where it might be. That really the founders just want to ensure water safety for kids, even if it's at a facility other than FINS. I could tell his intentions were genuine and not about making a buck, which made me feel even better about Bear being enrolled at FINS. But most of all, we just love it because he is learning so much and enjoying every minute. He asks almost daily to go to swim lessons, so I'm thinking I need to get him in a second day of the week. :)
If you have any questions at all about our lessons at FINS, Bear's progress, etc., I'm happy to answer them in the comments or via email (firstname.lastname@example.org). We've been calling Bear "Bear Phelps" and while he has no clue what that even means, he's loving it. We are headed to a waterpark for the next couple of days, Splashway, and I am so relieved in knowing that Bear has learned to swim and we can really enjoy our time in the water. One of our many summer goals has been achieved (only about 87 left)!
I'm typing this post from the Target cafe- seriously contemplating a personal pepperoni pizza (post-dinner) and trying to get some work done while my Mama gets ingredients to make us pumpkin bread. She's here visiting for the week and helping with Bear and Boone- I can't even begin to explain what a lifesaver she's been. I mean, the woman was vacuuming at 8am this morning. She's a saint and we're going to be seriously missing her come next week. Lisa, my MIL, was here last week and a huge help as well. We couldn't have survived these first few weeks as a family of four without them. If you're reading this Duke and Grammy, we love you both and can't thank you enough for all your help!
Oh and I guess I should mention why we're at Target...our cable and internet went out yesterday around 3pm so we've been living in the dark ages (#overdramatic). Hoping to have it fixed soon because having no TV and internet when you work from home with a 5 year old can be a bit challenging. Plus I need me some Real Housewives during those 4am feedings so I'll stop ordering all the things via Amazon Prime on my phone.
I wanted to do an Instagram round-up since A- I haven't done one in awhile and B-I'm low on content post-baby. Hoping to do some shoots soon and have some new posts for you guys but until then, here are some recent looks and links!
Headed to go grab some more newborn diapers (seriously, never enough diapers), all the Easter candy (my all-time fav), and TUCKS....ahhh, life a week postpartum. I am thankful to be healing well and despite the lack of sleep, loving every minute with our snuggly baby boy (and his big "helpful" brother).
